UN warns of crisis round Somali refugees

GENEVA, (RNW)– The United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, is warning that the situation of Somali refugees has reached crisis point. Many Somalis have fled to neighbouring Kenya, but the camps there are too full.

The UN says the situation in Somalia has become much worse over recent months. About one million people are housed in refugee camps in Somalia itself, most of them in the capital Mogadishu.

Last week alone, about 8,000 people fled the capital because of the increasing level of violence perpetrated by militias. Somalia has been rocked by civil wars since 1991.
