Reports from Somalia say at least 12 people have been killed in artillery battles between Government troops backed by Ethiopian Woyanne forces and Islamist insurgents in the capital, Mogadishu.

One witness says at least 20 mortar bombs exploded in the heart of the coastal capital as the rebels attacked advancing Ethiopian Woyann forces with barrages of rockets.

It says those killed in the Bakara market area of the city included four women and two children.

Reuters newsagency says the rebels are waging an insurgency of roadside bombings, ambushes and assassinations against the interim Government and its Ethiopian  mWoyanne military allies.
