How Meles Zenawi subverted Federal System of Ethiopia

Washington, Dc (galbeed.com) Editorial : Federalism, one of the framers of American constitution author, wrote and predicted upon the existence of a society composed of various geographically segregated groups divided by wide fundamental differences of race, religion, language, culture or economics. Its purpose, according to him, is to enable each group to be free from interference or control of others, to govern itself in matters of local concern, leaving matters of common interest to be managed centrally and those which are of both local and national concern to be administered concurrently. By this, differing interests and circumstances of the component groups are accommodated while at the same time securing the peace, security and stability of the country and its survival against the forces of division and conflict inherent in the heterogeneous nature of society. He concludes that:

“With the decentralization of powers to the regional governments and the consequent reduction in the powers exercisable centrally, the national government cannot become an instrument of total domination, so that the question of who controls it can be expected to excite less conflict and bitterness than if all powers are concentrated at the centre.”

All power is right now concentrated in the hand of minority TPLF regime that is ruling Ethiopia in an iron fist. A simple cadre, in the name of Federalism of Ethiopia, has been governing Somali region and other regions. This cadre employs form of “ Gemgema” and “agents surrogate governing style”. The reason that we are forced to write this editorial comment is the recent event in Somali Region and the way TPL F is unjustly administrating.

Asad Ahmed Cawar, the leader of  Dhagaxboor of Regional State, was recently  arrested by Ethiopian security forces in Addis Ababa.  Asad Ahmed was one of the loyalist hunch men of TPLF in Somali region for many years. He was  the author behind the killing of many innocent Somalis that have been executed by TPLF security forces when he was ruling Dhagaxboor. He was also considered one of the strongest leaders in Somali region when it comes to govern its district and to oppose the movements of championing the cause of freedom, justice and rule of law.

The nightmare has begun to leader of Dhagaxboor, Asad Ahmed Cawar,  when he did not show up to the court to the day that the so called hearing was scheduled to be orchestrated so that he witnessed against the business  man Ibrahim Xaad sentenced already to sixteen  years without trial. It was a theatrical court procedural process. While he was hiding in Addis Ababa, he told to the security forces  of TPLF,  he was forced to fabricate stories against Ibrahim Xaad. He was unfortunately  arrested and tortured; then he was transferred to Jigjiga and incarcerated in the famous jail called Gauntanano.

The biggest surprise to the region residents was that Asad, Ibrahim, Xamow and another man who were working hard to eliminate and fight the so-called de stabilizer of peace. A decree was passed by Minister of Federal Adviser of Meles,  Abay Zehaye, who is the ruler of Somali region. The arrested elements were the most notorious agents of Woyane regime in Somali region. And they are nicely fitting Somali old adage, “ Do not dig up a hole for your fellow man, you might not know that you will end up .”. Surely, they ended up in the prison that they were building for their own fellow compatriots fighting the minority regime of TPLF.

According to the latest “Gimgema”, the restructuring of Regional employee meeting  and business men and women that took place in Jigjiga, many Ethiopian Somalis suspected to passing  secrets to the movements to liberate Somali region from woyane thugs were dismissed. These kind of treatment have been practicing in the  region in the last seventeen years. Somali leaders are symbolic and ceremonial in the field of decision making and administrating the regional state. TPLF has put attractive words in the constitution to misled the majority of Ethiopia so that they can rule remotely from Addis Ababa and exploit the resources of Somali region such as  natural gas, livestock and other raw materials. TPLF has starved, maimed and killed the inhabitant of the region.

Ethiopian people are less enthusiastic about politics because they no longer think of their political affiliation as being central to their needs, rights and freedom.  They will be arrested and tortured or killed if they are suspected to be the sympathizers of opposition party. Once military regime was overthrown and TPLF cadres were crowned by US in 1991 , Ethiopian were taught to prove they were good citizens by studying the party platforms, not by ethnic affiliation as in the days of segregated South Africa .

One elderly Ethiopian Somali has sadly put, “The country we love is in trouble,” he added. “In truth, we are in grave danger of declining as a nation. If we do not act quickly, that decline will become dramatic.” TPLF’s fake federal system should be stopped. They have introduced wrong articles in the constitution to pit one ethnic group against others so that they can elongate their power. For example, tensions and fighting have claimed  the lives of many Ethiopians in Oromo, Afar, Somali and other ethnic groups regions who have lived peacefully for centuries.

We are among those calling for the strong opposition party that will unite all Ethiopian regardless of ethnic, religion and region. In the days of EPRP, and student movement, Ethiopia has done it. The program of some opposition parties may have its faults but that is not our major problem now. Our problem is with the human beings running a program that will safe Ethiopia from TPLF distorted federal system. We said before, we are all for change in this era globalization. Change brings vitality to life, change brings newness, change invigorates. We will work for change where it is necessary. If there is need to change the constitution, program or other documents, let it be changed. But we think the principal thing is the application of the rule of law. It is the rule of law that can tame any tyrant such as Atze Meles. It is the same rule of law that can deal with any anathema. This is what the civilized societies have used to overcome the mundane issues of our time. Our forefathers and martyr of Ethiopia deeds will be  used to be springboard to usher to an Ethiopia where all children will live in peace and prosperity and rule of law.
