Witnesses: Ethiopian(Woyanne) shelling kills 10 in Somalia

 

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — Mortar shells slammed into a residential area in Somalia’s capital, killing at least 10 people — including a mother and her child, witnesses and a hospital official said Tuesday.

The bloodshed Monday came as Ethiopian troops backing Somalia’s shaky government battled Islamic insurgents who have been fighting an Iraq-style guerrilla war for more than a year. Thousands of civilians have been killed. More on Witnesses: Ethiopian(Woyanne) shelling kills 10 in Somalia

RECENTLY WE went to Somalia as American tourists. We stayed only a night, but that was plenty of time to wander unescorted through the local market, explore town in a battered Toyota station wagon, and even head out into the desert to admire some ancient cave paintings. Tearing down the wall

We came together in a spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood! We met in common purpose and in an atmosphere of conciliation. We conquered! That is, together, we tore down the wall! That invisible wall of division, distrust and prejudice that had kept us from talking to each other for so long. Yes, we overcame the paralyzing fear that had left us deaf-mute and numb to each other’s pain and suffering. We exchanged ideas freely with goodwill towards all and malice towards none. We searched for genuine understanding so that we can move forward into the future together untethered by the antagonisms of the past.

Judge detains editor over pop singer case – CPJ

CPJ) New York — A judge in Ethiopia overseeing the high-profile trial of an imprisoned pop singer jailed the editor of an independent weekly for contempt of court today. The contempt charge came after the weekly published an interview with the singer’s lawyer, according to local journalists.
