Ethiopian Postal Service to launch Khat(Narcotic Drugs) memorial stamp

The state owned Ethiopian Postal Service (EPS) is going to launch three different kinds of Khat Memorial Stamps valued at 0.45, 0.55 and three birr next week on September 9, 2008.

The stamps that features Khat leafs( Narcotic Drugs) would be put on market all day long on September 9, 2008, from 2:00 am through 6:00 pm local time.

UN says Ethiopian food shortage now alarming

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. humanitarian office said Monday that food shortages in Ethiopia have reached alarming levels following widespread drought in the country.

Relief organizations are grappling with a “considerable shortage of supplies,” with the U.N. World Food Program in need of $136 million for its operation in the Horn of Africa nation, U.N. spokeswoman Michele Montas said. More on UN says Ethiopian food shortage now alarming

And the Somalis are not entirely wrong,” he adds. “The United States has provided intelligence to the Ethiopians, is a major source of development and military assistance to Ethiopia, has shielded Ethiopia from criticism of its occupation in the U.N. Security Council, has collaborated with the Ethiopians and the TFG in multiple cases of rendition of Somali suspected of terrorist involvement, and has engaged in gunship and missile attacks on suspected terrorist targets inside Somalia. These and other policies give Somalis the clear impression that the United States has orchestrated the Ethiopian occupation and is therefore responsible for its impact.”

Every now and then a headline will appear in our favorite newspaper about refugees fleeing Somalia because the country’s Islamists have mounted yet another attack in their campaign to take over Mogadishu and bring down its shaky government. 

At first, it all sounds familiar — just another round of violence in a part of the world where fighting has been a way of life for decades, if not longer. But then we think: “Maybe something really bad is going on over there; maybe we should worry about it.” Luckily, a third thought quickly comes to mind: “No, if the situation were really troublesome, we would have heard more about it; nothing, then, to be anxious about.” And our conscience is put to rest for the day.
