Long Road From the Slave Cabins to the White House
In 1776, the American Declaration of Independence announced to the world “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” African slaves were left out of the category of “all men”. In 1787, the U.S. Constitution declared “We the people of the United States do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” The African slaves were not part of the “We the People”.
