Second Year Anniversary of Woyanne Invasion of Somalia
Yesterday – marks the second year anniversary of the invasion of Woyanne troops into Somalia. It was December 28, 2006 when Woyanne forces entered Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia after two days in the city of Bal’ad situated about 30 kilometers north of Mogadishu and the city of Afgoye situated 30 kilometers south of Mogadishu.
There is no substantial achievement of Woyanne forces in Somalia in the last two year and they have had to endure constant attacks from resistance forces opposed to their presence in Somalia. In response to these attacks, Woyanne forces often responded with indiscriminate shelling of civilian areas.
Civilians living in Mogadishu have been the primary victims of the conflict between Woyanne forces and Somali groups opposed to their presence in Somalia. Many civilians have died or wounded while thousands remain internally displaced as we speak
Woyanne recently announced that it plans to withdraw its troops from Somalia in early January of 2009. The planned withdrawal of Woyanne forces from Somalia coincides with the sunset of the mandate of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and near collapse of TFG as a result of disagreements between the top two men in TFG. There have been speculations that the TFG Yusuf will resign leading to the fall of Prime Minister Nur Hasan Hussein’s recently announced cabinet and government.
